Hahaha. If I took too long while standing next to him, while trying to find the nose part and put it on him, he would either find it himself and put his nose in it for me, or he would bite the halter and take it away from me, playfully.

It was rather funny having my horse teach me how he wanted me to halter him. Sometimes he would just walk away from me in disgust, blowing his nose, if the halter was crooked or it took me too long to sort it out.

I think Jazz tells the other horses as well because they do the same thing now. It’s like the running joke…”mommy, this is how to do it”. But since we communicate well and I take their direction well…we figured it out together.

In this video, I was showing a friend of mine who was going to take care of my boys while I was on vacation. I wanted to show her “their” way of haltering before they had to teach her.

She did it just like I showed her and she said it was “easy as pie” and they listened to her well and did everything she asked so politely. I guess they liked their babysitter for the week.

Here is what I taught her.

Easy, Quick Haltering:

I get the halter ready in my hands, organized, before even getting to my horse. That means I have the nose hole “band” ready to put his nose, the long portion of the head strap on my right side (holding it with my right hand) and the buckle portion of the head strap on my left side (holding it with my left hand). In essence, it is situated so my horse can just slip his nose right in.

I position my body so it is next to my horse’s head, a bit back near the neck, and I am facing the same way as him (heads facing the same way). Since the food is right outside of Jazz’s pasture door here, I have to position my body in front of his just so he doesn’t go right to the food. But in most cases, you don’t have to do this.

Once I’m in position, the horse is stopped next to you, I present the halter to him by putting the nose opening right below his nose. If he doesn’t put his nose in, then I put it over his nose. This can happen quickly, like in the video because I opened the gate door, or slower if you go into the pasture or stall to put it on and your horse is just waiting for you. Every situation is a bit different and some may require you to be quicker than others. If you can go into the paddock or stall to put a halter on, it can be done slower if you like. Remember to always keep yourself and your horse calm and happy.

Once the noseband is on, then I raise my right arm which already has the long head strap in it and just place the strap over his head. My arm is under his neck and just wraps around on his right side. Then I grab the end of that strap with my left hand, which is also already holding the buckle. Then I bring my right arm back on the left side and put the strap through the buckle.

You will notice that I don’t put the strap through the second side of the buckle. I do this for safety. I used to use a breakaway halter in case of an emergency. Now I just don’t put the strap through the second buckle. This allows me to pull up the strap in an instance, releasing the halter immediately if there is an emergency and still allows me the strength of the halter if I need it. Again, it is all about your needs and situation.

The lead rope can be attached while doing this or not. If I’m going to lead them somewhere right away, I have it attached to the halter but draped over my shoulder while I put the halter on so that I don’t step on it. Sometimes I will also put it over the horse’s neck before I put the halter on so that it is off the ground and out of the way too. That way my horse doesn’t step on it while I’m trying to put the halter on. I’ve seen that happen – not so funny.

There you have it…a quick, easy way to halter. I hope it helps you and you enjoy the quick video.

Just have fun, be safe, and listen to your horse while he’s trying to communicate with you. Connection, connection, connection. ????

["post-30651","tva_lesson","type-tva_lesson","status-publish","hentry","tva_courses-bo2","post-wrapper","thrv_wrapper
["GET
