The Best Thing You Can Do For Your Horse

💛 Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many wonderful horses and horse owners, and one thing I’ve noticed is that we’re often so focused on doing things with our horses that we sometimes forget the value of simply being with them.

Most people think the best thing they can do for their horse is improve their training, learn a new technique, buy better quality food, or spend more time in the saddle.

While all of those things can certainly be valuable, one of the most powerful things you can do for your horse costs absolutely nothing.

Every now and then, leave the halter in the barn. Leave the training goals for another day. Put your phone away, walk out into the pasture, and simply hang out with your horse.

Watch them graze. Listen to the sounds around you. Feel the sunshine on your face and the breeze on your skin. ☀️🌿

Allow yourself to slow down enough to simply enjoy their company. There is no pressure on your horse to do anything and no pressure on you either.

This can be surprisingly difficult for many people because we’re so used to being busy. Our minds immediately start thinking about chores, work, responsibilities, what happened last week, or what needs to happen tomorrow.

But that’s exactly what we’re trying to leave behind for a little while.

Horses live entirely in the present moment. They aren’t worried about yesterday and they aren’t planning for next week. They’re paying attention to what’s happening right now. When we bring our busy human minds into the pasture, we’re often missing the very thing our horses are trying to teach us. One of the greatest gifts horses offer is the reminder to slow down, be present, and experience the moment we’re in instead of the one we’re already worrying about. 💛

Some of my favorite moments with horses have happened when I wasn’t asking them to do anything at all. There was no agenda, no expectations, and no goals. It was simply spending time together the way horses naturally do within a herd. 🐎

Horses are incredibly sensitive creatures. They notice far more than we often give them credit for. They recognize our energy, our emotions, and our presence. When we slow down enough to simply be with them, we often discover a deeper level of trust and connection than we can create through training alone. ❤️

Many horse people refer to this as HeartMath or a heart-to-heart connection. Whether you call it that or something else, most of us have experienced those moments when a horse seemed to understand exactly what we were feeling without a single word being spoken.

Some of the deepest transformations I’ve seen in my horse friends and clients happened when they stopped focusing on all the noise in their heads and started becoming fully present with their horse. Instead of thinking about what happened yesterday or what needs to happen tomorrow, they began noticing the beauty around them, appreciating nature, and seeing the world through their horse’s eyes. 🌿

When you focus on the present moment, on how you feel and how your horse feels, something special begins to happen. That focus, intention, and willingness to slow down builds trust and connection deeper and faster than almost anything else I’ve ever seen.

It’s truly beautiful. 💛

This connection is actually the first step in building a truly strong relationship with your horse. When a horse feels safe, understood, and connected to you, communication becomes easier both in the saddle and during training. Many people spend years searching for better techniques when often the foundation they’re missing is simply a deeper relationship.

Once that connection is established, something even more beautiful begins to happen. Trust grows. Communication improves. Partnership develops. Before long, you and your horse are accomplishing things together that once felt impossible. The true companionship that so many horse lovers dream about is often much closer than they realize. 🐎❤️

I’ll share more about that in future emails.

Those quiet moments are often where the deepest relationships are built. Try it this week and let me know how it goes.

Before I sign off, I wanted to share a quick personal update since it’s been quite a while since many of us have connected.

In 2023, my life changed unexpectedly after a serious accident that led to a long and challenging recovery journey. 💛 It has been one of the most difficult experiences of my life, but it has also taught me some lessons that I’m incredibly grateful for.

One of those lessons is the importance of slowing down, appreciating the things that matter most, and not taking our health, our relationships, or our time with the horses we love for granted.

I’ll share a little more about that journey in my next email.

For now, I simply wanted to say hello, reconnect, and remind you to spend a few extra minutes with your horse this week doing absolutely nothing at all.

You might be surprised by what happens. ❤️
